Museums in Salida and Buena Vista Colorado |
| The Salida Museum, located at 406 Highway 50 West in Salida behind the Visitor's Center, is open Memorial Day to Labor Day. The museum contains a treasury of Indian artifacts, household furnishings, art, photographs, mineral specimens and tools associated with railroading, mining, farming and ranching.
The Buena Vista Heritage Museum, located at 511 East Main Street in
Buena Vista, is housed in the Old Chaffee County Courthouse which was completed in 1883. In 1974, the building became the home of the Buena Vista Heritage Museum. The Chaffee County Council of the Arts and the Buena Vista Model Railroad display are located on the second floor. The old county jail located to the rear of the old courthouse is now used as the school administration building.
The Museum is open Memorial Day through Labor Day 10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.
There are also several "living ghost towns" in the region including St. Elmo and Turret which hearken back to the area's mining past. |
