Easily a dozen cross-country ski and snowshoe trails are sprinkled throughout the Valley. A great trail for snowshoeing in a protected winter wonderland is Waterdog Lakes Trail off US 50 west of Garfield. Stands of pine along this popular trail insulate snowshoers against the wind. The trail ends in a beautiful high alpine basin and it feels like another world. Suitable for all levels.
Near Buena Vista, the Ptarmigan Lake Trail off Cottonwood Pass Road appeals to more seasoned snowshoers while the Browns Creek Trail welcomes most abilities of cross-country skiers and snowshoers.
Resources for finding these trails include the locally authored “Skinny Skis and Snowshoes: a Guide to Winter Trails in the Upper Arkansas Valley.” The book is available at local book, bike and outdoor shops as well as other random retailers. The city of Salida recreation department also offers low-cost snowshoe and cross-country ski trips. Call the rec department at 719.539.5703 for current offerings, or visit salidarec.com.
